Ericsson underlines its support for 5G in Indonesia – Developing Telecoms

XL Axiata, one of the leading telecommunication companies in Indonesia, has partnered with Ericsson to deploy its dual-mode 5G core solution.

Ericsson says its dual-mode 5G core will bring XL Axiata’s 4G and 5G services together in a single, fully integrated, container-based and cloud-native core network. This technology will first be deployed for new sites in East Java to cater to the growing data traffic in that region.

Based on the aggregation and expansion of 4G capabilities, along with the addition of 5G services in accordance with XL Axiata’s operational and business needs, the new solution will bring with it significant improvements in performance, says Ericsson.

It will future-proof the network and lead to a reduction in costs associated with the core network as it rolls out new connectivity and services to subscribers.

Ericsson says its dual-mode 5G core solution takes advantage of cloud-native architecture to ensure XL Axiata has access to the latest software updates and features and can upgrade, as needed, when bringing new services to market.

This isn’t the only 5G news from Ericsson in Indonesia in the past few days. Indeed, the company recently unveiled its Ericsson Imagine Live 2024 roadshow in Indonesia, showcasing Ericsson’s advanced technology solutions and 5G use cases that are relevant for Indonesia as it transitions to a digital economy.

Ericsson, points out that it was the first to trial 5G in Indonesia and enable its customers to launch non-Standalone 5G back in 2021.

The roadshow also gave Ericssion a chance to remind the powers that be of their role in bringing 5G to Indonesia. Krishna Patil, Head of Ericsson Indonesia, emphasised that the timely access to affordable mid-band spectrum would serve as an important enabler to accelerate 5G deployment and enable the full benefits of connectivity for Indonesia.

He reiterated the importance of getting clarity on timing for mid-band spectrum allocations in Indonesia. Investment-friendly allocation terms for spectrum would act as a catalyst to accelerate 5G deployment in Indonesia, he added.

Ericsson also quoted industry association the GSMA, which says that, from 2024-2030, 5G is forecasted to contribute more than US$41 billion in GDP to the Indonesian economy.
