5G network plan to ‘reset’ Ghana’s economy — Communications Minister – Modern Ghana
The Minister of Communications and Digitalization, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has announced that Ghana’s new 5G network infrastructure will enable a “reset” of the country’s economy.
Speaking at a press briefing on Thursday, May 30, Mrs Owusu-Ekuful said the new shared 5G network infrastructure company, the Next-Gen InfraCo (NGIC), will attract new investments and improve access to digital services across Ghana.
“NGIC will enable a ‘reset’ of Ghana’s economy by attracting investments across all sectors and providing access to all manner of e-services and improve the quality of life for all Ghanaians,” she said.
The deal signed between the Government of Ghana, telecom companies Ascend Digital and K-NET, and technology giants like Nokia, Radisys and Tech Mahindra will see NGIC become the sole wholesale provider of 5G mobile broadband services in Ghana.
NGIC has been awarded a long-term 5G license and plans to launch commercial services across Ghana within six months.
It will build out 4,400 cell sites over the next four years to provide coverage to Ghanaians.
The neutral infrastructure company will lease capacity to all mobile network operators in Ghana on a non-discriminatory basis.
This is expected to reduce costs for telcos and make internet access more affordable.
The Minister is optimistic the deal will boost digital entrepreneurship among Ghana’s youth and create new opportunities across various sectors.
“Our youth will have the opportunity to become digital entrepreneurs, driving innovation and economic growth,” she said.
Through NGIC’s high-speed 5G network, the government also aims to improve access to vital services like healthcare, education and digital finance nationwide.
This major public-private partnership is slated to accelerate Ghana’s digital transformation and drive the country closer to the goal of 100% digitalization by 2030.
