AT&T announced on Tuesday that it has expanded its 5G network in Horry County, adding a new cell tower to enhance the area’s coverage and capacity.

This new cell tower will provide better coverage and speeds along International Drive, among other benefits.

At AT&T, we know how important it is for our customers to stay connected,” said Jay Byrd, Regional Director of External Affairs, AT&T South Carolina. “We are proud to invest in Horry County with wireless infrastructure necessary to connect in today’s digital world. With enhanced wireless coverage, our customers will be able to experience better network connectivity that will help with virtual learning, responding to emergencies and connecting with one another.

The area will also be provided access to Band 14, a nationwide high-quality spectrum set aside by the U.S. Gov’t specifically for FirstNet – the only nationwide communications network created with and for public safety.

Band 14 is used as “public safety’s VIP lane”. In an emergency, this “lane” can be cleared and locked exclusively for FirstNet subscribers, according to the wireless network.

When not in use, AT&T customers can enjoy Band 14’s added coverage and capacity.

Between 2019 and 2023, AT&T invested more than $1.4 billion in wireless and wired networks in the Palmetto State.
