Digicel Samoa has kicked off the rollout of its 5G network, the first in the country.
The telco confirmed the service has gone live in five sites across Apia, Samoa’s capital city.
Digicel noted that customers with compatible 5G devices will be able to use its 5G network around the Levili data center, FMFMII, NFP building, Tatte building, and Frankie Mall.
“We’re building on the strong foundation of our 4G network to usher in a new era of connectivity with 5G,” said Digicel Samoa CEO, Anthony Seuseu.
“This launch isn’t just about faster speeds, it’s about delivering an exceptional experience for our customers in Samoa. The launch of 5G opens a new chapter of possibility, and we’re committed to continuously improving our network so that our customers can benefit from this transformative technology.”
Earlier this year, Digicel confirmed it would deploy Nokia’s AirScale portfolio on top of its existing 4G network as part of its 5G rollout.
In an update this week, Digicel said that test results at the 5G sites delivered average speeds of 550-600Mbps, with the full potential reaching up to 1Gbps.
Digicel Samoa is part of Digicel Pacific, which is owned by Australia’s Telstra. Digicel Pacific also operates in Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Tonga, Vanuatu, and Nauru, and is estimated to have around three million subscribers.
