Microsoft has warned that the end of support for Teams’ legacy messaging infrastructure may lead to service disruptions.
The end of life for the legacy service infrastructure for chat messaging has been scheduled for March 31, 2024.
In order to avoid disruptions to your service and other issues, Microsoft advises any Classis Teams users to upgrade to the latest version of its software within at least three months of the end-of-life date.
The changes are due to impact Microsoft Teams Desktop, Teams on iOS and Android, and Virtual Desktop Interface clients (VDI).
How to Update Teams
Microsoft has released a guide explaining how to update to the latest version of Teams on computers and mobile devices.
With a Desktop client, new updates are installed automatically, with new versions usually released every month. However, the application could remain out of date if it has been restarted.
The automatic update does not apply to Virtualised Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) users, and support for Classic Teams for VDI will end on June 30, 2024.
Provided you have the necessary local permissions, you can download a Desktop client from the Microsoft Teams website.
To check for updates, click the ellipsis next to your profile picture and select ‘Check for Updates. Teams will then check to see if there are any updates available.
Mobile applications are updated through their related platform’s app store. Android users will, therefore, need to use the Google Play app, and iOS users will have to go to the App Store.
New Teams Generally Available
In August this year, Microsoft announced a new Teams app, which has been made generally available for Windows and Mac, providing users with the best performance yet.
It now has full feature parity for nearly all features, such as call queues, PSTN calling, and contextual search in chats and channels.
General availability also brings with it new features and enhancements, as well as seamless cross-tenant communication and collaboration across multiple tenants and accounts.
In March, Microsoft launched the new Teams app in public preview, which was up to twice as fast with 50 percent less memory usage on Windows than its predecessor.
Anupam Pattnaik, Product Lead, Microsoft Teams at Microsoft, wrote on Microsoft’s blog announcing the availability of the new Teams app: “Today, we are excited to announce general availability of the new Microsoft Teams app for Windows and Mac including education customers.
“Our goal was to reimagine Teams from the ground up to deliver a faster, simpler, smarter, and more flexible app to help you stay productive and collaborate more effectively.
“We have focused on providing high-quality performance and enhancing the basics in areas such as reliability, security, and IT management to make sure that new Teams meets the evolving requirements of your organization.”
End of Skype for Business Server Support
In September 2023, Microsoft announced that from October 1, 2023, Teams Rooms will not support connections to the Skype for Business server.
According to Microsoft, a “small number of customers” that use on-premise configurations will be impacted by this change.
In its place, Team Rooms is shifting its support to the Exchange server, which is already used by the Teams Desktop.
As Teams was the company’s preferred platform, it took the decision to retire Skype for Business Online while trying to convert as many Skype customers into Teams users as possible in the process.
Microsoft is going all-in on Teams, and it seems to be working, based on recent achievements, such as hitting 300 million monthly active users earlier this year.
