The MTR Corp announced on Tuesday that the 5G mobile network in 24 stations is being progressively upgraded, enabling passengers to enjoy a faster and smoother 5G mobile service with low latency.

Upgrading works at Tin Hau Station have already been completed and the enhanced service commenced today (Tue).

Upgrades in Wan Chai, Kowloon and Admiralty stations are expected to be completed in 2024, while works in the remaining stations are expected to be completed before the end of 2027.

This came as the rail giant collaborates with the four mobile network service operators for the enhancement. Last year, a contract for a new commercial system was awarded to China Mobile HK to carry out the installation works for 3.3 and 3.5 GHz indoor radio base stations progressively in 24 busier MTR stations.

The Office of the Communications Authority welcomed the MTR and four mobile network operators (MNOs) to implement a mobile network system upgrades.

“The new radio base stations will deploy the spectrum in the 3.3 GHz and 3.5 GHz bands allocated for providing 5G services for the first time, which will significantly increase the speed and capacity of 5G services along MTR lines,” a spokesman said.

The Office pointed out that at present, Hong Kong’s 5G coverage has reached over 90 percent of the city’s population, including major locations in urban areas and all MTR lines of 98 stations, and Hong Kong’s 5G service penetration rate has also reached close to 90 percent of the population.

“Both 5G network coverage and service penetration rates are among the best in the world,” the spokesman added.
