GLOBE Telecom Inc. remains committed to widening its 5G network despite slow adoption due to the high cost of 5G-compatible devices.

The Ayala-led telco said it deployed 27 new 5G sites across the Philippines in the first quarter as part of a commitment to providing the latest technology and superior connectivity to customers.

The rollout was said to have boosted Globe’s 5G outdoor coverage, which hit 98.35 percent in the National Capital Region and 92.86 percent in key cities in Visayas and Mindanao during the quarter.

The addition of the new 5G sites also allowed Globe’s network to accommodate over six million 5G devices in March 2024 alone.

Despite the rollout, Globe has moderated spending on new 5G sites, taking into account current market conditions and a search for viable 5G use cases.

The telco has also strengthened its global presence by expanding its 5G partnerships, collaborating with 167 global partners in 87 destinations worldwide.

“We remain unwavering in our commitment to innovation and excellence in connectivity,” Globe Senior Vice President Joel Agustin said.

“Our strategic approach with 5G ensures that we not only lead in technology deployment but also provide our customers with unparalleled connectivity and seamless experiences both locally and internationally,” he added.

5G technology offers significantly faster internet speeds, allowing users to download large files, stream high-definition videos, and access cloud-based applications with minimal latency.

Multiple devices can also connect to the network simultaneously without compromising speed or performance, particularly beneficial in densely populated areas and Internet of Things applications.
