Department Of Telecommunications: Homegrown telecom firms bat for DoT’s 5G-driven intelligent village initiative, ET Telecom

NEW DELHI: Homegrown telecom firms said they would support the Department of Telecommunications’ (DoT) fifth-generation technology-driven initiative for enabling smart villages in the country.

“We have seen smart cities but the concept of an intelligent village is a new one and VoICE will provide all-out support for the success of the concept, and India’s success can be replicated to tens of thousands of villages not only in the country but globally,” RK Bhatnagar, director general, Voice of Indian Communication Technology Enterprises (Voice), said in a statement.

Voice represents domestic telecom companies such as Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Tejas Networks, VNL, United Telecoms, Coral Telecom, HFCL, and Tidal Wave, among others.

The telecom department has released the ‘5G Intelligent Village Initiative’ in response to the pressing need for equitable technological advancement by harnessing the advantages of 5G to uplift rural communities.

To this extent, the DoT has invited a call for proposals on “From Connectivity Gaps to Smart Solutions: Designing 5G Networks for Rural Innovation- 5G Intelligent Villages” to explore the potential of 5G in critical sectors such as agriculture, education, healthcare, government and sustainability.

Some of the proposed 5G-driven smart applications for rural regions include remote monitoring of a patient after surgery (e-health), remote diagnostics, telemedicine, tele-education, e-attendance, smart irrigation, Livestock monitoring, weather monitoring and forecasting, vehicle tracking, e-call, asset tracking, and more, according to a copy of the presentation for an ‘Intelligent Villages’ workshop on July 10.

ETTelecom has reviewed a copy of the presentation.

The initiative initially covers 10 villages in Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Assam, and others.

On the aspect of the development of a telecoms network for rural areas, VoICE has pointed out that a high-speed network with a capacity of 1 Gbit/s in the backhaul can be created with an optical fibre network which may be further extended to provide nearly 100 Mbit/s bandwidth in a village, or a cluster of two to three adjacently situated villages.

“Provisions may be made in the transmission equipment to upgrade the bandwidth to 10 Gbit/s in the backhaul and 1 Gbit/s in the village for future requirements,” VoICE said.

It recommended using Wi-Fi hotspots for doorstep connectivity, and the deployment of satellite links for hilly and remote areas.

“A complete ecosystem is required to be developed for the rural area. Governments as policymakers, telecom service providers, equipment manufacturers, and local bodies should work together for a win-win situation for the expansion of telecom services in rural areas,” VoICE said.
