Calgary is opening Canada’s first-ever downtown 5G test environment as another building block for the local tech scene to flourish.

The partnership between the City of Calgary, Rogers, Platform Calgary and Calgary Economic Development will open application intake for three programming streams to tap into the downtown network.

According to a City of Calgary news release, the 5G Discovery Zone will streamline connectivity and testing environments, making it easier for academics and start-ups to research and commercialize their products.

The three programs, Connect & Test, Connect & Test Plus and Themed Challenges, are a tiered application system for groups to apply and get connected to the programming and support for their concepts. The themed challenge program invites application ideas that address mobility, public safety and climate and environment challenges.

“This initiative demonstrates The City’s strong commitment to fostering innovation, supporting local businesses and delivering solutions,” said Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek in a prepared media release.

“Together, we’re building a sustainable and adaptable Calgary.”

Rogers said they want to use their network to drive innovation and industry-leading technology.

“As part of our investment in western Canada, this testbed will enable The City of Calgary and developers in advancing 5G applications that contribute to improving public safety in Canada and our climate and environment,” said Ron McKenzie, Chief Technology and Information Officer, Rogers Communications.

Terry Rock, president and CEO of Platform Calgary said the new Discovery Zone will provide another tool for Calgary’s innovation community.

“Calgary innovators are building the technologies that will solve some of the most dynamic issues facing the world today,” he said.

Calgary Economic Development president and CEO Brad Parry agreed. Calgary’s on the forefront of tackling major global challenges through technology,” he said.

“This collaboration on Calgary’s 5G Discovery Zone is yet another example of how we are building an environment where companies can test, develop and scale to compete globally – right here in our city,” Parry said.
