Second 5G Network Won’t Cost Consumers More – BusinessToday

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has reiterated that the second 5G network, set to be announced by the end of the year, will not incur additional costs for consumers.

The Minister stated that telecommunications operators have agreed not to raise prices for any plans once the service becomes available. Recently, only four mobile network operators signed the Share Sale Agreement with the government-owned Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB), currently the sole spectrum owner for 5G in the country.

Despite assurances of no price hikes, uncertainties remain regarding the rollout costs for the second 5G network and the funding for the billion-ringgit project. DNB was previously mandated to fund the national project, with an estimated cost exceeding RM15 billion.

Further clarity is also needed on which vendor will handle the second rollout and whether there will be any conflict with Ericsson, which is currently engaged by DNB.
