Telstra claims latest ‘world record’ on mobile network, with a call using 5G standalone – iTWire

Australia’s largest telco said the world record took place last week on Samsung’s Galaxy S23 handset, which supports 5G standalone technology.

“With more than 59 world first achievements on our mobile network and counting, we’re excited to announce our latest world record on our mobile network – the longest ever distance voice call using 5G standalone on a commercial network – 99.8km away from the closest tower in Burra, South Australia,” notes Telstra.

“This world record took place last week on Samsung’s Galaxy S23 handset, which supports 5G standalone technology.

“It also signifies the addition of 5G to our Blue Tick testing criteria – the mark we give to the devices best suited for regional Australia, especially when it comes to making calls.”

Telstra’s Executive for Wireless Network Engineering, Sri Amirthalingam said that, “This breakthrough in 5G voice technology is testament to Telstra’s unwavering commitment to network coverage excellence, which is vital for our regional and rural customers.

“We are proud to be leading this work globally and will continue to evolve the Telstra Blue Tick program alongside our device partners so we can deliver the best coverage experience.”

Telstra notes that as 3G networks begin to close, it is “innovating in new ways to fill coverage gaps and give a consistent network experience for our customers in more remote locations”.

“Although situations allowing a full 99km extension will be limited due to the lack of line of sight in some areas, there are many areas in regional/rural Australia where effective 5G coverage will now reach well beyond 15km, meaning more 5G coverage in more places,” concluded Telstra.

Commenting on Telstra’s announcement, Emilio Romeo, Head of Ericsson Australia and New Zealand, said: “Today’s announcement is another major step towards closing the communications gap for rural and regional Australians. Regardless of where you live, access to reliable mobile coverage and connectivity is essential and, in these regions, voice calls are a critical aspect of this connectivity.

“With the successful completion of the longest-ever distance voice call using 5G standalone on a commercial network, Ericsson, Telstra and Qualcomm are filling the coverage gaps in our most remote locations, ensuring Australians remain connected, regardless of where you are.”

Qualcomm Technologies, Inc SVP & GM, Durga Malladi said: “As we continue to expand the reach of 5G we are setting new standards for what is possible, ensuring that consumers, no matter their location, can rely on a consistent and reliable experience. Qualcomm Technologies’ long-standing collaborations with Telstra and Ericsson helped make this milestone possible; we are proud of this achievement and look forward to many more in the future.”
