The government selected a week-old firm for the roll-out of a shared 5G infrastructure because it was specifically established for such a project, Communication and Digitalization Minister Ursula Owusu-Ekuful has said.

The comment is in reference to questions raised by investigative journalist Manasseh Awuni about the decision by President Akufo-Addo to grant executive approval to the deal although the company was incorporated less than two weeks.

The government this week announced its partnership with seven industry players on a new shared infrastructure to deliver affordable 5G mobile broadband services across Ghana.

The seven partners are Ascend Digital, K-NET, Radisys, Nokia, and Tech Mahindra and two telcos – AT Ghana and Telecel Ghana.

The partners have established the Next-Gen Infrastructure Company (NGIC), which has been awarded a 5G license and is expected to launch 5G services across Ghana within the next six months, followed by expansion to other parts of Africa.

The company will be the first 5G Mobile Broadband Shared Infrastructure Entity to build a nationwide 4G/5G network. It will also work with the telcos to launch affordable 4G/5G-enabled FWA CPEs and smartphones in Ghana within this calendar year.

Addressing the media on the development on Thursday(30 May) Owusu-Ekuful explained this is the unique arrangement and first of its kind on the continent.

“So, it had to be specifically formed for the purpose of delivering this service based on the strategic policies and decisions of the government, and it is borne out of our experiences and that is why we chose not to auction it,” Owusu-Ekuful said.
